Strabane signal trophy ambitions with double signing

Strabane have signalled their intentions to challenge for major honours in 2027 with the signing of highly-rated all-rounder Alan Mathew from North County.

The arrival of Mathew represents a significant boost for the Red Caps, who were one of the surprise packages of last season's North West Premiership, confounding predictions of a relegation struggle to finish an impressive third.

Mathew, 26, arrives at Strabane Park with an excellent pedigree, having established himself as one of the leading performers in Leinster cricket over the past five seasons.

A hard-hitting left-handed top-order batsman and right-arm spinner, the Indian-born all-rounder previously represented Kerala at Under-19 state level, captained their Academy side for two years and played university cricket for three seasons.

He moved to Ireland to further his studies, initially joining Railway Union before switching to North County, where he has been a consistent match-winner. His senior career statistics make impressive reading, with 150 wickets at an average of 21.14, including career-best figures of 6 for 30 against Cork County. He has also accumulated 1700 runs at 21.52, including four half-centuries and a century.

Strabane all-rounder Ryan Gallagher admitted there was considerable excitement surrounding his arrival.

"It's super exciting to have him at the club. Speaking to a few lads in Dublin, he's highly, highly rated," he said. "The stats show that he's a top-class player. He's been leading the charge with the wickets in Dublin for the last five years and he's a top-order batter too."

Gallagher revealed that he had witnessed Mathew's batting ability at first hand during a visit to Rush towards the end of last season.

"I got the pleasure of watching him at the end of the season when I called in at Rush. Alan scored 100 when North County were in a really sticky situation. It was a top-class innings. Good clean striking and some elegant shots. The club's really excited to have him on board and we're hoping he can produce some big performances for us and get us to where we want to be."

Having exceeded expectations last summer, Strabane are determined to build on that progress rather than rest on their laurels. The ambition is clear – to establish themselves among the leading contenders in the Premiership and mount serious challenges in the cup competitions.

"We want to be in the top half of the table and challenging for silverware this year," Gallagher continued. "We're really excited to see what they bring to the club. Speaking to Alan personally, he's a great lad, full of enthusiasm, and he's excited about the opportunity."

The other major addition is Melvin Deveraj, who makes the move from Tyrone rivals Donemana after just one season at The Holm.

The opening bowler made an immediate impression following his arrival from Leinster club Merrion, claiming 31 wickets in his debut campaign with Donemana.

His ability to strike with the new ball should provide Strabane with another valuable weapon, while Mathew's all-round capabilities will add considerable depth and balance to the side.

Both signings will also be welcomed by former Ireland international John Mooney, who will once again head up the coaching staff at Strabane Park. The addition of two proven performers will provide him with further options as he looks to build on that success. Strabane certainly won't be able to fly under the radar in 2027 as they did last summer.

Expectations will be considerably higher, but with Mathew and Deveraj joining an already competitive squad, there is growing optimism around Strabane Park that the Red Caps can take another significant step forward. Having surprised plenty by finishing third, Strabane are now assembling a squad that looks capable of doing considerably more than merely making up the numbers.
