Ireland U19s share spoils on South African tour as Biju and Shields impress
Ireland Under-19s enjoyed a worthwhile trip to South Africa, winning two and losing two of their four 50-over matches in Potchefstroom against North West University and a North West Invitational XI.
The short tour provided valuable experience for a new generation of Irish cricketers as preparations begin for the 2028 Under-19 World Cup, with several players taking the opportunity to stake their claims for places in the squad.
Adamstown's Sidharth Biju captained the side and finished as leading run-scorer with 139, while Munster duo Mark Donnelly and William Shields topped the bowling charts with eight and seven respectively.
Ireland began with a disappointing 101-run defeat against North West University, who piled up 317, despite four wickets from Donnelly. Biju made 64 and Muckamore's Marko Bates 55, but Ireland were dismissed for 216.
There was a much-improved performance the following day as Ireland bounced back to beat the North West Invitational XI by nine wickets. Shields was outstanding with figures of 4 for 18 as the hosts were dismissed for 172, with Ted Hasler, Fintan McCarthy and Ruben Sanders claiming two wickets apiece. Railway Union's Hasler then struck an unbeaten 92 and Ardmore's Bobby Brolly made 63 as Ireland cruised to 173 for one.
The third game proved a much sterner examination of the tourists' character. Sanders claimed 4 for 40 and Donnelly 3 for 15 as North West University were dismissed for 176, but Ireland slumped from 61 for one to 66 for five in reply. Captain Biju came to the rescue with an unbeaten 70, sharing a vital 80-run sixth-wicket partnership with Phoenix's Aadil Naizam, who made 30. Holywood's Lucas McKeown also contributed 33 as Ireland secured a four-wicket victory.
The final match produced another dramatic contest, although this time Ireland finished on the losing side. Reduced to 61 for six, the tourists staged a remarkable recovery through Gethin Kelleher and Sanders, who added 164 for the seventh wicket. Kelleher finished unbeaten on 94, while Sanders struck 75 as Ireland recovered to post 256 for eight. The home side reached their target with just one delivery remaining, winning by four wickets despite two wickets from McKeown.
Across the four matches, Biju's 139 runs led the way, followed by Brolly with 113, Sanders with 110 and Hasler with 105.
Donnelly's eight wickets and Shields' seven were particularly encouraging, while Sanders also impressed with six.
There were plenty of positives for Ireland coach Pete Johnston, with the performances of several newcomers suggesting healthy competition for places as the squad builds towards the next World Cup. The two victories, particularly the recovery from a precarious position in the third match, demonstrated the character within the group, while the defeats highlighted areas requiring improvement - the frequent concession of bowling extras an obvious flaw.
For Ireland's emerging talent, it was time well spent in unfamiliar conditions against competitive opposition.
