Injuries force Scotland pace bowler Brad Wheal to call time on career
Scotland international Brad Wheal has called time on his professional cricket career at the age of just 30, with a succession of injuries finally forcing the pace bowler to hang up his boots.

The Hampshire seamer has been a key figure in Scotland's progress on the international stage over the past decade, representing his country at four T20 World Cups and playing his part in some of their most memorable victories.
Wheal made his Scotland debut against Hong Kong in 2016 and went on to make 44 appearances across ODI and T20 international cricket, claiming 51 wickets.
Among the highlights were Scotland's famous victories over Bangladesh at the 2021 T20 World Cup and the West Indies the following year, while his final World Cup appearance came earlier this year in India.
However, the physical demands of fast bowling have taken their toll, with four stress fractures in his back and recent knee surgery leaving him with little choice but to retire.
"I've loved my time at Hampshire and representing Scotland as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand," admitted Wheal.
"It's not been an easy decision, but one I am at peace with. I've had four stress fractures in my back and recently had surgery on my knee, and ultimately my body can't cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore."
Wheal also enjoyed a successful county career with Hampshire, whom he joined in 2015, making 131 appearances across all formats.
He was part of the Hampshire sides that won the Royal London One Day Cup in 2018 and the Vitality Blast four years later.
Despite the disappointment of his premature retirement, Wheal leaves with no shortage of cherished memories.
"I've been fortunate enough to represent Scotland at four World Cups and have had some incredible experiences along the way.
"I've made some lifelong friends and shared a dressing room with some great people, and those are the things I'll probably miss the most."
Cricket Scotland Head of Performance Steve Snell paid tribute to Wheal's contribution, describing him as an important figure in the country's international development.
"To represent Scotland at four T20 World Cups is a superb achievement, and Brad has consistently demonstrated his quality against some of the best players in the world," said Snell.
"Brad can look back on his international career with considerable pride. He has played his part in some significant moments for Scottish cricket."
For Wheal, the next chapter begins earlier than he would have wished, but he departs with the gratitude of Scottish cricket and memories that will last a lifetime.
