Merrion left with title heartbreak after final-day disappointment

Merrion’s 2026 season will inevitably be remembered as one of what might have been after the Anglesea Road side saw their Leinster Premiership title hopes disappear on the final day.

They had put themselves in an excellent position going into the closing stages of the campaign, but defeat against Malahide proved fatal as Pembroke swept through to claim the championship.

It was a cruel conclusion to a season in which Merrion had played some excellent cricket and possessed arguably the strongest batting group in the competition.

Swapnil Modgill led the aggregates with 723 runs at an average of 40.17, including two centuries and two half-centuries. Raj Undre was even more prolific when available, scoring 632 runs at 52.67 and remarkably converting all four of his fifty-plus scores into centuries.

Irish international Stephen Doheny was another major influence, compiling 589 runs at 49.08, including four fifties and a magnificent unbeaten 164. Seb Dijkstra added 452, while veteran John Anderson contributed 389 runs in his final season before bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary domestic career.

That depth made Merrion formidable, although the final weeks demonstrated just how unforgiving a title race can be. One poor result at the wrong time was enough to undo months of excellent work.

The bowling unit also contained plenty of quality. Corne Botha led the way with 32 wickets at just 17.84, including two five-wicket hauls. Andrew Doheny claimed 29 at 19.59, while Mikey O’Reilly took 28 at 18.18. Peter Forkin’s 22 wickets gave Merrion a strong quartet of front-line wicket-takers, while Modgill added 14 to his substantial contribution with the bat.

There will be disappointment that such an accomplished group finished without the Premiership trophy, particularly after getting so close. Yet their campaign also showed they remain very much among Leinster cricket’s elite. The loss of Anderson removes one of the great constants of the past two decades, but there is still considerable quality throughout the squad.

Merrion do not require major rebuilding. Fine margins separated them from the title in 2026, and if they can maintain this core, another serious challenge should be expected next season.
