The historic Downpatrick Cricket Club 1849 ground, The Meadow, ex international ground provided a magnificent backdrop as Royal Challengers Belfast (RCB) successfully concluded another phenomenal chapter of community sport with the fifth edition of their flagship T20 tournament, the Royal Premier League (RPL-5).
Running across action-packed weekends in September, the tournament brought together communities, players, and officials from across Ireland and England to Downpatrick's iconic grounds.
The competition culminated in a thrilling final on Sunday, 13th September 2026, right here at Downpatrick, where the Dunmurry Lions triumphed over the Downpatrick Castle Challengers to lift the prestigious 4 plus-foot rolling RPL trophy and the £1,000 winners' prize.
TOURNAMENT STATS & RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS AT THE MEADOW
The tournament data captured across the 12 matches hosted at Downpatrick highlights an explosive and fiercely contested edition of T20 cricket:
* Total Runs Scored: 3,100 runs across 24 innings, backed by 450 extras, 153 fours, and 123 sixes.
* Wickets & Bowling: 182 wickets fell from 2,600 balls bowled, featuring 9 maidens and a staggering 1,291 dot balls.
* Milestones: The tournament recorded six individual 50s, one century, fourteen 50+ partnerships, and one 100+ partnership.
* Fielding & Dismissals: 79 catches and 8 stumpings were executed over the course of the competition.

* Orange Cap (Most Runs): Nitish Kukdeja (Downpatrick Castle Challengers) dominated the batting charts with 201 runs across 4 innings at an astonishing average of 100.50 and a strike rate of 174.78, including 14 fours and 12 sixes. Bilal Farooq (Dunmurry Lions) followed closely with 192 runs (averaging 64.00, strike rate 139.13), hitting the tournament-high 13 sixes.
* Purple Cap (Most Wickets): Dayananda Markuli Gowdappa (Dunmurry Lions) led the bowling attack with a sensational 11 wickets in 15.5 overs, maintaining an economy rate of 4.17, an average of 6.00, and a tournament-best 56 dot balls.
* Most 4s in Tournament: Nitish Kukdeja also claimed the top spot for boundaries with 14 fours.
* Most Catches / Dismissals: Siddhesh Patil (Dunmurry Lions) led the fielding leaderboard with 8 dismissals (8 catches, 0 caught behind, 1 caught and bowled) over 4 matches.
* MVP Standings: Bilal Farooq topped the Most Valuable Player rankings with an MVP rating of 23.50, closely followed by Nitish Kukdeja (20.30) and Dayananda Markuli Gowdappa (18.87).

Formed in 2020 by a group of cricket enthusiasts within the Northern Ireland community—including founding committee members Ravi Ningegowda, Dr Darshan Kumar, and Dr Raghuram Satya—RCB's vision was simple: use cricket to unite people across diverse nationalities and backgrounds.
Five years on, that vision has blossomed into a cross-border spectacle. RPL-5 featured ten competitive teams representing regions across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and England stepping onto the pitch at Downpatrick Cricket Club:

To maintain complete neutrality and uphold the highest standards of fair play, RCB made the significant organizational decision not to enter its own team into RPL-5, allowing the visiting squads to battle it out entirely on merit.
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS & INDEPENDENT OFFICIATING AT THE MEADOW
Matches at Downpatrick Cricket Club were kept to the highest possible standards thanks to rigorous scheduling and NCU registered umpires. The tournament finale featured esteemed officials, including ICC umpires Alan Neill and Jareth McCready, alongside NCU umpires Davy Russell, Derek Bailey, Jeff Maguire, and Brian Ferris.
Strict enforcement of regulations—such as slow-over-rate management and player restriction criteria (capping regular premier-level players per match)—ensured the games remained fiercely competitive yet fair. Match balls for the tournament were proudly sponsored by Castle Sports World.
EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION AT DOWNPATRICK CRICKET CLUB
Beyond the boundary ropes at The Meadow, RPL-5 placed a heavy emphasis on youth development and community integration.
The tournament's live-streaming, scoring, and commentary team on the Royal Challengers Belfast YouTube channel was spearheaded by talented young rising stars from local academies:

These young volunteers received special recognition for their media production and match-day operations, being presented with medals by the Consul General of India in Belfast.

Reflecting on a milestone fifth season hosted at Downpatrick Cricket Club, Ravi Ningegowda shared his excitement for the future:
