Salmon leads the way as treble-winning Newbuildings savour season to remember

Newbuildings’ remarkable treble-winning campaign was built on quality throughout the side, but the final averages leave little doubt about the player at the heart of their success.

Peat Salmon enjoyed an extraordinary all-round season, becoming the only Newbuildings batter to pass 1,000 runs while also finishing as their leading wicket-taker.

Salmon piled up 1,105 runs at an average of 50.23, striking at 140.1 and producing two centuries and five half-centuries. His highest score of 172 was accompanied by a remarkable 89 sixes, figures which underline just how destructive he was.

His contribution with the ball was equally significant. Salmon claimed 46 wickets at just 14.37, conceding only 3.33 runs per over and producing a spectacular best of seven for eight.

Yet the strength of Newbuildings was that they were anything but a one-man side.

Ryan Hunter enjoyed another outstanding summer, scoring 919 runs at 48.37, including three centuries and seven fifties. His 114 boundaries were the most in the side and provided an important contrast to Salmon’s six-hitting power.

Ross Dougherty accumulated 737 runs at 40.94, while Jared Wilson reinforced his reputation as one of the side’s most valuable all-rounders with 663 runs at 39 and 44 wickets at 13.41.

Those numbers are exceptional. Wilson’s strike rate with the ball was just 18.9 and his best figures of five for 20 ensured Newbuildings possessed two genuine match-winners in the attack.

Mark Hanna chipped in with 514 runs, while Jason Dunn scored 453 and Gareth McKeegan’s 334 included an unbeaten century. Johnny Thompson made the most of his opportunities, averaging 53.60 across nine innings.

With the ball, Ross Hunter’s 30 wickets added further depth, while Josh Wilson took 26 and Gregory McFaul 24, including a five-wicket haul. Dunn’s 16 wickets came at an impressive average of 16.

It all added up to a season where Newbuildings had answers in virtually every department. The treble was no accident. Their batting had power, depth and consistency, while the bowling attack possessed variety and wicket-taking threat throughout. For a club already accustomed to success, 2026 will still stand out as a special year — one in which individual excellence was repeatedly matched by collective strength.
