INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR STRABANE TRIO

Strabane Cricket Club is celebrating a proud week after two of its brightest young talents, Abaigh Gillespie and Abbey-Gale McGarrigle, were selected for the Ireland Under-16 girls squad competing in Belfast.

Adding to the sense of occasion for the Tyrone club, Abaigh’s elder brother Ruairi Gillespie is also involved at the tournament in his role as scorer, giving Strabane three representatives on the international stage.

The club has a long and distinguished tradition of producing players capable of progressing to representative and international cricket, and the club believes the latest recognition is further evidence that its development structures continue to bear fruit.

“Strabane has a rich tradition of producing internationals and we are very proud that Abbey-Gale, Abaigh and Ruairi are continuing that tradition and following in the footsteps of previous players and scorers,” said the club.

“It shows that the club is doing something right and producing pathways that allow the kids to flourish and get to the highest level.”

The achievement is also being viewed as recognition for the considerable work taking place away from the spotlight.

“It’s a credit to the coaching and mentoring pathways that we have in place and to all the unsung heroes who work very hard in the background,” the spokesperson added. “It is also a credit to the family support network that makes so many sacrifices of time and resources to give the kids the opportunity to get to the highest level and follow their dreams.”

Ultimately, though, Strabane believes the greatest credit belongs to the youngsters themselves.

“The biggest credit goes to the individuals who put in so much work and who challenge themselves to continually improve. The elite level is a very tough place to be, but Abbey-Gale and Abaigh have both worked extremely hard at their games and that hard work has been rewarded.”

Ruairi’s progress has followed a different path but is no less significant.

“Ruairi has completed his scoring accreditations and has now scored at club, interprovincial and international level. Strabane and the families couldn’t be prouder of the three of them for the recognition they have received this week in Belfast.”

For a club with such a proud cricketing history, having three young representatives involved in the Ireland Under-16 tournament represents another encouraging chapter.
