Jayathunga century dents Bonds Glen title charge

Dunith Jayathunga continued his remarkable season with a sixth century as Eglinton dealt a major blow to Bonds Glen’s title hopes with a commanding 77-run victory.

The prolific Sri Lankan professional was again the standout performer, striking a superb 117 from 114 balls as Eglinton compiled 269 for seven from a rain reduced 48 overs.

After Andy Millar fell early, Jayathunga rebuilt alongside skipper Andy Lucas, who made 35, before adding further momentum with Robbie Millar in a substantial third-wicket partnership.

Jayathunga’s innings contained 13 fours and a six, while Robbie Millar contributed 28 and elder bother Jamie struck 32 from 30 deliveries as Eglinton pushed beyond 250.

Mark Robinson was the pick of the Bonds Glen attack with four for 51, while Sam Haslett claimed two wickets.

Bonds Glen began their chase positively despite losing Dharm Singh early. Heinrich Roberts made a rapid 16 before the division's leading run scorer William McClintock blasted 35 from only 19 balls.

Danie Rossouw then kept the title challengers interested with an aggressive 63 from 57 deliveries, hitting nine fours and a six.

However, once Rossouw was dismissed with the score on 159 for five, the innings unravelled.

Ian Young led the Eglinton attack with three wickets, while Robbie Millar claimed two before Jack Martin finished proceedings dramatically with two wickets in his only over.

Bonds Glen were dismissed for 192 in only 31 overs, losing their final five wickets for just 33 runs.

The defeat represents a significant setback to their championship ambitions, while Jayathunga’s latest hundred further underlined an outstanding individual campaign.
