Eglinton smash records in run-filled Letterkenny victory

The Northern Knights may have found conditions at Eglinton difficult during the week, but the home side and Letterkenny had no such problems as records tumbled in an extraordinary run-fest.

Eglinton powered to 535 for six from their 50 overs — a new Senior League record — before Letterkenny replied with 347 for nine. The match aggregate of 882 runs was also an Irish record, although Rush’s 569 in the National Cup remains the highest individual team total.

Andy Millar led the assault with 131 from 87 balls, striking 16 fours and five sixes. Dunith Jayathunga added 111, while Jamie Millar smashed 86 from only 28 deliveries, including eight sixes.

Ian Young finished unbeaten on 72 and Robbie Millar added a rapid 45 as the hosts cleared 500 in spectacular fashion.

Letterkenny responded positively through Riyaz Bablu’s excellent 97. Sohel Shaik struck 62 and Ramees Machingal made 52, but Robbie Millar’s five for 84 ensured the visitors never threatened the massive target.

Eglinton completed a 188-run victory and will hope their recent form can carry them into the promotion play-off picture. The title may be difficult to reach, but there remains plenty to play for in the home straight.
