TYRONE LEGENDS RINGING THE BELL

Two Tyrone cricket legends will be honoured at Bready over the coming days with Julie Logue and Joe Doherty ringing the Roy Torrens bell during Ireland Women’s three-match ODI series against West Indies.

Former Creevedonnell and Brigade player William Wilson, the former Cricket Ireland President, is also among the trio chosen for the ceremonial role, introduced as a lasting tribute to the late Roy Torrens and his immense contribution to Irish cricket.

For Logue, a former Ireland Women wicketkeeper-batter who won 19 caps between 1988 and 1996, the moment will be particularly special on home soil.

“Firstly, I would just like to express my gratitude and delight at being given the opportunity to ring the bell at the women’s international between Ireland and the West Indies at Bready on Friday,” she said.

“I feel it’s a great honour as a past international to still be recognised in this way, especially in my home, the North West.

“The women’s game has come a long way since my playing days and there are great opportunities nowadays for young girls to become full-time cricketers, which is nice to see really.

“With these women’s internationals being staged at Bready, it gives the young upcoming girls the chance to see what can be achieved.”

Doherty, a former Chairman and President of Cricket Ireland, has given decades of service to Strabane, the North West and Irish cricket administration.

“First of all, it’s a lovely gesture by Cricket Ireland to introduce the bell as an everlasting tribute to Roy, who contributed so much to Irish cricket and became synonymous with Ireland on the international stage,” he said.

“As for me, it’s a great honour to be remembered by Cricket Ireland. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’ll do my best to enjoy the moment and hope it sets our women on the way to another proud performance.”

The three games are on Friday July 10th, Sunday July 12th and Wednesday July 15th.
