MOONEY LANDS HUNDRED ROLE

Former Ireland international John Mooney has added another high-profile role to his growing coaching CV after being appointed fielding coach with Southern Brave for this year’s Hundred.

The Dubliner, who won 182 caps for Ireland and was part of some of the country’s most memorable days on the world stage, has built a strong reputation as a specialist fielding coach since moving into the backroom side of the game.

Mooney has just finished working in the Indian Premier League and has also held international fielding coaching roles with both the West Indies and Afghanistan.

His latest assignment sees him link up with Southern Brave, one of the most recognisable franchises in English cricket’s short-form showpiece.

Speaking to the Strabane Chronicle, Mooney said the opportunity had come at an ideal time and would allow him to continue relationships formed in franchise cricket.
“It’s a good opportunity,” said Mooney. “It’s the same owners as the IPL — GMR — so it’s just maintaining that bond with those guys.

“I’m really looking forward to it. We have a good team on paper, so hopefully we can go a long way in the tournament with a bit of luck.”

The appointment is further recognition of Mooney’s standing in the modern coaching game.

Who knows, it may even be enough for him to be given a role in Ireland!
