Killyclooney got off the mark in the T20 Championship with a hard-fought nine-run victory over the North West Under-19s in an entertaining contest.

The home side posted an imposing 171 for 6 thanks largely to an excellent innings from Keenan Vieira. The South African overseas professional struck 66 from just 41 deliveries, peppering the boundary with five fours and five sixes. Vieira shared a half-century stand with the in-form Cody Mehaffey, who continued his fine season with a brisk 39 from 25 balls that included four fours and three sixes.

Captain Timothy Dougherty also made a valuable contribution, hitting 33 from 29 deliveries with four boundaries and a six to ensure Killyclooney maintained momentum throughout their innings, despite the best efforts of left-arm seamer Travis Faulkner was the standout performer, claiming three wickets for just 12 runs.

The Under-19s responded positively and were always in the hunt despite the required rate creeping up.

Charlie Gault anchored the chase with 34 from 31 balls, while Luke Marillier produced an aggressive 41 from 31 deliveries, striking three fours and three sixes to keep the required rate within reach.

Despite those efforts, Killyclooney's bowling attack held its nerve.

The match remained alive until the closing stages thanks to Jake Montgomery. The Glendermott teenager launched a late assault, smashing four sixes in an unbeaten 17-ball 32, but Killyclooney managed to close out the game.

For the Under-19s, there were plenty of positives with the bat, but Killyclooney's greater experience ultimately proved decisive.

Most of the U19s will be back in action on Thursday at Ardmore as the Emerging Warriors take on the MCC in a 40-overs contest (11am).
