It was another record-breaking day for RBAI in the Schools Cup Final as they won the Ferguson Grainger Cup for a fourth successive year, after bowling out their hosts, Campbell College, for 42, the joint lowest total in the final.

It was a school’s showpiece dominated by the bowlers with one notable exception, RBAI captain James West who scored 72; the next best individual score in the match was 13.

RBAI made 148 for eight in their 35 overs with 94 of them coming from the last 13 overs. West’s opposite number, Seb Yeates, finished with the superb figures of three for 10 from his seven overs with  Jacob McClure Dalzell and Myles McNaught, who finally ended West’s innings, both taking two wickets.

If Campbell were to make any inroads on the RBAI total their top three had to fire but McNaught was caught in the second over and when Yeates was lbw to Ben Walsh in the next, the hosts, who accepted  the match after Pirrie Park was declared unplayable on Thursday, were eight for two.

It didn’t get much better as Crothers took three wickets before being taken off after just four overs and in the end six of the seven RBAI bowlers all took at least one wicket, with only Patrick Charlton getting into double figures for Campbell.

It was all over in the 21st over, with RBAI completing a 106 runs victory – not the biggest of their recent victories, they beat Ballyclare High by 126 runs two years ago – but 42 all out was also the total that Friends scored in the 2005 final.

When Campbell won the Cup in 2022 – RBAI’s only defeat in their last 19 Schools Cup matches – Ryan Hunter scored exactly twice as many as the school totalled this year. A day to forget for them but another memorable day for RBAI who will undoubtedly start favourites to make it an incredible five in a row next year
