Teenager Reuben Wilson has been named in a 14-strong Ireland squad to take on New Zealand in Belfast next week and will become the youngest Irishman to win a Test match cap if he makes the XI.

After a number of impressive performances at the U19 World Cup earlier this year and probing spells in the Emerald Challenge warm-up match, the 19-year-old Clontarf fast bowler could be a sensational starter at Stormont only nine days after his first-class debut.
“I was really impressed with Reuben’s control and skillset this week, without a lot of red ball cricket behind him,” Ireland skipper Andy Balbirnie said.
“I’ve faced him in the nets a number of times, and he tests your defence which is key in Test cricket. We know what he did in the U19 World Cup and there might be an opportunity for him to play.”
Whether or not Wilson makes the cut on Wednesday, Isobel Joyce will remain the youngest Ireland Test player — the former captain turned broadcaster featured against Pakistan in 2000, just five days after her 17th birthday.
As expected, veteran opener Paul Stirling will miss the Test with a calf strain and his place at the top of the order seems likely to go to Australian-born Jake Egan, although Stephen Doheny and Cade Carmichael are also candidates.
Balbirnie explained that with only one multi-day game for preparation Ireland have to select on form, and the 22-year-old from Perth made his case emphatically with a composed century in the Emerald Challenge.
“We have guys making first-class debuts this week who are going to be playing in the Test match next week. That’s not going to happen in other countries. So you’re picking on what you see,” Balbirnie said, bemoaning his side’s lack of red-ball games in between Tests.
“Jake Egan wasn’t on the radar, but he’s a guy who showed us he’s form in the first-class format and we have a game next week so why wouldn’t he be selected?”
All-rounder Curtis Campher is carrying an injury and will play only as a specialist batter.
Ireland from: Andrew Balbirnie (capt), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Cade Carmichael, Stephen Doheny, Jake Egan, Matthew Humphreys, Tom Mayes, Andrew McBrine, Liam McCarthy, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Reuben Wilson, Craig Young.
