Trio of NW players heading Down Under

The season may have just began here in the North West, but a trio of young stars are already planning to spend the winter in sunnier climes Down Under.

Ben Mills, Sam Haslett and James Smallwoods have all signed recent deals in an effort to not only improve their cricket, but also broaden their life horizons.

Mills is returning to Western Park, based in Victoria, where both he and Gavin Roulston made a serious impression, helping them win four trophies.

"Joining us last season from (Northern) Ireland, the big fella set the season alight on field and off field," said Western Park.

"A terrific player and person, we can't wait to welcome 'Boris' back in September."

Brigade wicket-keeper batsman Smallwoods is currently hors de combat with a broken right wrist, but is expected back next month.

"South Wagga is pleased to announce the signing of James Smallwoods who joins us for the 2026/27 Season from Ireland," said the New South Wales based club.

"James is a talented young wicketkeeper-batsman having played for Cricket Ireland U17s.

"During the 2025 season he topped the run charts across both the Cricket Ireland U17 Inter-Provincial Competition and the North West U18 League."

Bonds Glen all-rounder Sam Haslett will be based in Victoria, playing for Bendigo United, who announced his signing on their FB page.

"The Irishman represented his country at the recent U19 World Cup and will now embark on his maiden season on Australian soil, where he’ll be looking to make an immediate impact at Harry Trott Oval.

"A serious addition for Bendigo!"

We wish all three the best of luck in Australia.
