Typhoons won the SS50 trophy in convincing fashion with an 83 runs victory over Dragons in the title decider at Bready.

Defending 281 for eight, Bella Armstrong claimed the huge wickets of Dragons captain Amy Hunter (40) and Leah Paul (27) in the space of seven balls and when she bowled Alana Dalzell four balls later, the defending champions were reduced to 124 for five.

Debutant Marama Downes, a Maori who plays for Pembroke, hit three boundaries in her 22 and Cara Murray and Lara McBride continued to fight hard but the target proved to be well out of sight as the wickets kept falling.

Local girl Kia McCartney narrowly missing out on a hat-trick in an impressive spell which ended with figures of four for 48 and the Player of the Match, helped by a superb diving catch by Laura Delany to  dismiss Murray.

As in the game at Pembroke last week, Typhoons enjoyed a superb start with Gaby Lewis and Bella Armstrong putting on 92 for the first wicket in 14 overs and when Murray made the breakthrough, thanks to a smart stumping by Hunter, Lara Maritz came in and added 71 with her captain for the second wicket to put their side firmly in control.

However, the second half of the innings proved a test of endurance with not a single boundary as exactly 100 runs were scored between the 26th and 47th overs.

Indeed, while the top three hit 18 fours from their 162 balls faced, Georgina Dempsey hit the only boundary from the remaining 138 balls in the innings with Laura Delany (40) and Alice Tector (39) having to run every one of their runs.

Murray was the most successful bowler but McBride was just as impressive, finishing with figures of one for 41 but this was Typhoons day and Typhoons tournament in what is the last representative action for the international players ahead of their three-match ODI series in England, starting on September 1.
