If Ireland are to record a consolation win on Wednesday and get their first World Cup qualifying points on the board they will have find a way to stop nemesis Hayley Matthews — and on current form that may mean locking the West Indies captain in her Derry hotel room.

Matthews followed up her unbeaten century in Friday’s first one-day international with exactly 100 at the Bready club in Co Tyrone yesterday as the West Indies beat Ireland by six wickets to take a winning 2-0 lead in the series.
In addition she was the pick of the visitors’ attack, claiming 2-34, removing both Orla Prendergast and Amy Hunter, to take her tally to five wickets over the weekend, and win yet another Player of the Match award against Ireland..
The two matches followed similar paths with the West Indies asking the Girls in Green to bat after winning the toss in both games, and Hunter again top-scoring for Ireland, albeit her 67 from 87 balls falling well short of that excellent 96 on Friday.
Hunter added an Irish record 106 for the fourth wicket with Rebecca Stokell, who rode her luck to make a welcome half-century, while Leah Paul was also back in the runs with 32 before she fell to a flying one-handed catch at mid-off — as stunning as it was unexpected.
The Ireland total of 241-7 was also down on their opening game effort and despite an early wicket for Prendergast it was nowhere near enough to trouble Matthews and fellow centurion Stafanie Taylor who got the job done with 11.1 overs to spare.
While Aimee Maguire took two of the wickets to fall in space of three deliveries it was Georgina Dempsey and Louise Little who most impressed, bowling much tighter lines and showing the discipline associated with injured veterans Laura Delany and Arlene Kelly.
“The West Indies bowled much more consistently up top so credit to the girls for getting 240 on the board because it wasn’t easy out there,” skipper Gaby Lewis said.
“We were better with the ball, definitely, but we’ve still got a bit to go.”
