SION MILLS ON THE UP

Sion Mills are looking upwards as they try and gain the first step of promotion back towards Senior cricket. The North West's most successful club currently play in League Two, where they are in second place behind Glendermott, having lost a table topping clash at The Rectory at the weekend.

Mark Patterson top-scored with 35 in their total of 149, and followed it up with three wickets, but Dylan Lynch's hard-hit 64 saw Glendermott win by four wickets to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Sion have decided to bring in an overseas player, with South African Louis Botha arriving, and club stalwart Simon Galloway explains the rationale behind the decision.

"Over the past couple of years Sion Mills has been implementing a new youth programme within the club to help build the foundations for the future and the next phase of that plan was to bring in an overseas influence who is as passionate about coaching as well as playing," said Galloway.

"Louis Botha was deemed the perfect fit for the club after many video calls, WhatsApp communications and so on and a little over a month into his time with us we are delighted with his contributions so far.

"The kids are absolutely thriving on his coaching and he has settled perfectly into the club and village as a whole.

"He has also demonstrated his abilities as a player for our senior team and we have no doubt this will continue and improve even further as the season goes on. At the beginning of the year we set ourselves the goal of promotion into League One again next season and have made a good start in that respect but we know there is still a lot of hard work to be done and we won’t be found wanting when it comes to that," he added.

The club featured a number of youngsters in their clash at Glendermott alongside more experienced performers as they start to blood them in the adult game.  There's no doubt that the famous club are making steps in the right direction.

Sion Mills face North Fermanagh this weekend hoping to close the gap at the top.
