MURTHY STARS AS STRABANE STUN DONEMANA
Vadivel Murthy was the surprise package for Strabane as they beat Donemana by 34 runs in the Park on Sunday to gain their second win of the season to sit proudly at the summit of the Premiership.

Opening the bowling Murthy claimed a five-wicket haul to help clinch the unexpected win against a side expected to be challenging for the title.
“Donemana are a top-quality side, so we knew it was going to be a tough game from the start,” said Murthy. “On a difficult wicket, every run and every wicket was important, and thankfully things went my way with the ball. I’m delighted to contribute with five wickets, but more importantly to help the team get such a big win.”
Murthy was quick to pay tribute to his Red Cap team mates who battled like tigers to claim the victory.
“A huge credit goes to all the lads for the effort and intensity we showed in the field throughout the innings.
“A special thanks as well to our skipper Kevin Gallagher for his leadership and belief in the team, and to Aaron Gillespie for always backing and trusting me. Wins like this come from a complete team performance, and hopefully we can keep this momentum going over the next few games.
“That’s my best bowling performance in senior cricket so far. I joined Strabane in 2019 and I’ve really enjoyed being part of the club and the cricket community here ever since.”
What makes Vadivel’s effort all the more commendable is that the 35-year-old Senior Software Engineer with Optum has battled his way back after a serious injury derailed his career.
“I missed the entire 2024 season after suffering a serious knee injury towards the end of 2023, which led to meniscus and ACL surgery, so it’s been a long road back.
“I worked hard during rehabilitation and it’s very satisfying to be back this season contributing to the senior team again. At 35 years of age, moments like this are very special. I’m just happy to help the team, and hopefully we can continue building on this result over the rest of the season.”
Murthy played cricket in his native India, and was delighted to join the Tyrone club shortly after arriving in Ireland to work in 2019.
“The club and the people around it made me feel welcome straight away, and since then it has felt like home for me both on and off the field.”
Strabane will be hoping for more glory days in the season ahead.
