The opening round of the Leinster Senior Two Cup delivered everything the competition prides itself on – high-scoring thrillers, remarkable individual performances, dramatic collapses and a series of emphatic statements from clubs eyeing a deep run this season.

The tie of the round came at Anglesea Road where Merrion edged defending champions Leinster by three wickets in a pulsating chase. Leinster posted an imposing 240 thanks largely to a magnificent innings from Ruben Newton, whose superb 134 from just 112 deliveries contained 16 fours and five sixes. Newton dominated the innings and appeared to have set up a winning total for the holders.
Merrion, however, refused to buckle under pressure. Teenager Oliver Molins produced the innings of his young career with a composed unbeaten 81, striking 10 boundaries in a mature knock beyond his years. With wickets falling around him and the game hanging in the balance, Molins found valuable support from Jack Atkinson. The pair shared a crucial unbroken stand of 51 for the eighth wicket, with Atkinson contributing a calm 26 not out as Merrion completed a memorable victory and knocked out the reigning champions in dramatic fashion.
There was no shortage of runs at Malahide where the home side piled up a daunting 377 for 7 before defeating Wexford by 138 runs. Alex Brown stole the headlines with a devastating unbeaten 151 from just 78 balls in one of the standout innings of the round. Brown hammered 14 fours and nine sixes in a breathtaking display of clean hitting.
Earlier, Malahide had already laid strong foundations through Matthew Langan and Srijan Yerramsetti. Langan struck 67 while Yerramsetti made 69, the pair sharing a superb second wicket partnership of 142 that put Wexford immediately on the back foot.
To their credit, Wexford responded positively in the chase. Sean Graham blasted 65 from only 48 deliveries, including 10 fours and two sixes, while Jintu Mathew compiled a fluent 72 featuring 14 boundaries. Despite their attacking intent, the target always looked beyond them, with Yerramsetti capping an excellent all-round performance by claiming four wickets to secure Malahide’s passage into the quarter-finals.
One of the most dramatic finishes arrived in the clash between The Hills and Phoenix, with The Hills snatching a stunning one-run victory. Defending a modest 166 after Levon Shields claimed four wickets, Phoenix started the chase impressively through Johit Mujal.
Mujal’s aggressive 60 from 43 balls, containing six fours and three sixes, guided Phoenix to a commanding 97 for 2 and seemingly towards victory.
However, the match turned spectacularly as teenager Brandon Vincenzo Sebastian produced a devastating spell, taking four wickets for just nine runs to trigger a collapse of remarkable proportions. Phoenix fell agonisingly short, sparking jubilant celebrations among The Hills players and supporters after one of the competition’s great escapes.

Pembroke issued an ominous warning to the rest of the field with a crushing 206-run win over Railway Union. Batting first, Pembroke amassed 326 for 3 in an innings built around several outstanding contributions.
Irish Under-19 international Dan Murray was the star attraction, finishing unbeaten on 110 from 105 balls with 11 fours and four sixes. Murray combined brilliantly with Greg Hollins, who smashed an unbeaten 76 from only 53 deliveries, the pair sharing an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 170 that completely took the game away from Railway.
Sanil Gupta had earlier set the platform with an excellent 74 featuring 10 boundaries. Railway Union never threatened in reply, with Bruce Whaley’s 39 proving the top score. Joe Prendergast and Keegan Shipp each collected three wickets, while Murray and Harry St Leger claimed two apiece to wrap up an emphatic victory.
Last season’s beaten finalists Terenure also progressed comfortably with a commanding 115-run success over Civil Service. Terenure posted 242 for 4, anchored by an excellent unbeaten 92 from Zeeshan Mumtaz. His innings included 12 fours and three sixes, while a second wicket partnership of 83 with Abu Baker, who made 52, proved pivotal.
Civil Service never seriously threatened the target despite Abishek Kare making 46 with five boundaries. Syed Bachan and Vishnu Sadanadan each took three wickets as Terenure advanced with minimum fuss.
Sandyford enjoyed a similarly convincing win, defeating Clontarf by 110 runs after posting 311 for 8. Openers Jawad Khan and Ajay Shastry laid the perfect foundation with a partnership of 130. Khan struck 81 from 75 balls with 10 fours and three sixes, while Shastry compiled a classy 94 that also included three maximums.
Daire Vickers claimed three wickets for Clontarf, but the chase never fully gathered momentum despite solid contributions throughout the top order. Karthik made 38 and Sultan Habib added 36, though neither could produce the major innings required. Shastry completed an outstanding all-round performance by taking four wickets to cap a dominant Sandyford display.
North County produced one of the most impressive batting performances of the round as they chased down Laois’ 265 with extraordinary ease, winning by nine wickets in just 38 overs. Laois had looked competitive after Rocky Butt raced to a 42-ball half-century and Osama Sabri struck a late 46 featuring five sixes. Irish youth international Johan George impressed with four wickets for North County.
Any hopes Laois had of defending the total quickly disappeared as Syed Alman and Mohammed Sherzad dismantled the attack in a magnificent partnership worth 230 for the second wicket. Alman finished unbeaten on 121 from 107 balls, including 12 fours and four sixes, while Sherzad made an equally fluent 103 not out with 10 fours and three sixes as the Balrothery side surged into the last eight.
Castleknock completed the quarter-final line-up with a seven-wicket victory over Balbriggan. Balbriggan were restricted to 191 after only facing 35 overs, with Ronan Kedian’s 34 the highest score. Abdullah Umair claimed three wickets during a disciplined bowling display.
The chase proved straightforward thanks to a superb unbeaten 122 from Saif ur Rehman Malik. His 111-ball innings featured 20 fours and two sixes, and alongside Masrat Aslam’s unbeaten 36 he shared an unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 130 to guide Castleknock safely home and into the next round.
