Cricket Ireland have admitted they wanted to play three one-day internationals rather than a second Test match on their tour of Bangladesh in November.

The final itinerary has been confirmed with Test matches scheduled for Sylhet and Dhaka followed by three T20 internationals – two in Chattogram and the last one back in the capital Dhaka.

The original schedule on the Future Tours Programme said two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is, although all bilateral tours are up for discussion before final agreement, with both sides negotiating the best shape of a tour for them. The hosts - in this case the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) - always have the final say.

A spokesman for Cricket Ireland explained: “At the outset due to costs and reciprocal obligations, we explored 1 test, 3 ODI , 3 t20s but BCB wanted to play more Test cricket and instead put forward the current 2 Tests, 3 T20s.

“With the T20 World Cup approaching, we definitely wanted to retain the t20s, but we were also keen to play more ODI matches given we are in a 50-over World Cup qualifying cycle.

“So, while not ideal, we have settled on 2 Tests, 3 T20s.”

Ireland have played one Test in Dhaka, in April 2023, which Bangladesh won by seven wickets on the fourth day. Ireland were bowled out for 214 and 292 – Harry Tector scored two 50s and Lorcan Tucker hit his maiden Test century – but despite six wickets for Andy McBrine the hosts took a first innings lead of 155.
