DOHERTY IN THE RUNS AGAIN FOR FOX LODGE
Fox Lodge took a major step towards promotion to the top flight with a nine-wicket win demolition of nearest challengers Ballyspallen at the weekend.
The victory was about as complete an all-round display as anyone could wish for and extended the Ballymagorry side’s lead at the Championship summit.
One of the reasons for their outstanding form has been the elevation of Ali Doherty to opener, and skipper Jonny Robinson was fulsome in his praise for the all-rounder.
“Ali has been in outstanding form with the bat, striking the ball cleanly and has really embraced his new role at the top of the order,” said Robinson.
“He’s certainly full of confidence, leading the batting unit alongside our overseas professional Gayan Maneeshan. On top of his batting, Ali has been a real asset with the ball as well. He’s a handy option who gives us control and regularly picks up crucial wickets when we need them. He might not bowl a large number of overs, but whenever he does, he always delivers.”
Doherty is certainly a multi-dimensional cricketer, proficient in all three disciplines, with his fielding backing up his undoubted quality with the bat and ball too.
“Ali is easily the best fielder in our side. He sets the standard for the rest of us with his energy and athleticism, consistently saving 10–20 runs every game,” added Robinson.
“It’s been a pleasure watching him play this season. He’s worked hard on every aspect of his game, never misses a training session, and it’s clearly showing in his performances”
Despite his form, Doherty hasn’t been included in any representative squads as of yet, a decision that surprises Robinson.
“Having seen some of the recent Emerging Warriors squads, I’m surprised Ali hasn’t been given an opportunity yet. He’s only turned 24 halfway through the season and still has so much to offer. With his work ethic and ability, I’ve no doubt he would thrive in that environment and continue to grow as a player.”
