Munster produced the shock of the youth interprovincials as Seneth Sumanasinghe put the NCU U17s in a spin with a magnificent seven-wicket haul to clinch a famous three-run win.

What's even more impressive about the victory is that it comes only four days after the young Munster squad were beaten by 409 runs against Leinster.

I guess it's a case of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and that's certainly true of these teenagers, who may well have saved Munster youth cricket from a forced amalgamation.

It didn't look likely as they slumped to 47 for five batting first at Stormont, but Cillian Ross dug in with Mark Donnelly and they doubled the score in a sixth wicket stand of 47.

Ross top-scored with 48, just missing out on a deserved half century - two short runs proving costly for the Cork County batsman.

A total of 115, while respectable, still looked well short of a winning one, especially as the hosts reached 70 for one with runs for Robbie McCollam (30) and James West (23).

What transpired over the next hour will go down in Munster folklore as slow left-armer Seneth Sumanasinghe produced one of the greatest spells in youth interpro history.

He bamboozled the NCU batting, and backed up by some athletic fielding took 7 for 10 in 8.5 overs to clinch a three-run win amidst great scenes of joy from players, management and supporters.

After the trials and tribulations of the past week, their faith in the wonderful sport of cricket was restored,

My new favourite quote is: "Failure is a bruise, not a tattoo." Munster definitely suffered a few bruises last week, but their triumph today will go a long way to healing the wounds.

Well done all.

In the other U17 interpro, Johan George's five-wicket haul was instrumental in leading defending champions Leinster to victory against their North West counterparts at Sandy Bay in Larne.

The North County spinner had the excellent analysis of 5-28 as the North West were bowled out for 93, with James Smallwoods making 21 and skipper Sam Haslett an unbeaten 26.

There were two wickets also for Pembroke seamer Dan Murray.

Bobby Stott got two wickets early on including Brian Dunphy (21), but Bruce Whaley's hard hit 38 (5 fours, 2 sixes) took Leinster to 85 for two.

Bobby Brolly got three quick wickets, but Leinster passed their modest target with nearly 38 overs to spare.

The two scheduled youth games in the North West were abandoned without a ball bowled, while in the all Leinster U15 girls match, Leinster navy beat the Blues.
