RANITHA INSPIRES STRABANE
It was a huge weekend for Strabane as they edged out a crucial win over Eglinton in the Premiership thanks to a century from Ranitha Liyanarachchi.
The Sri Lankan has a wealth of experience, having played international youth cricket at all levels, and also played for the senior team in the Asian Games.
The 31-year-old is settling into life in Strabane and the club is reaping the benefits.
“I played three years in the UK, but the weather is a bit different here and it’s also very quiet and peaceful in Strabane,” said Ranitha.
“It really is a beautiful place with such friendly people. I’m really enjoying playing for Strabane and everyone has been really supportive on and off the field. I don’t feel that I’m under pressure when I play. I’ve been helped by the fact my wife is here with me and we live with one of the Club members, which has helped us settle very well, enjoying their company.
Ranitha struggled initially coming to terms with the sift nature of the pitches in Ireland as well as the drop in temperature from Colombo.
“I found it a bit difficult initially to find the rhythm in my batting during the first couple of games and I had to adjust to the wickets. It wasn’t easy coming from 40 degrees heat down to 12 degrees heat but now I have acclimatised.
“I really enjoyed my innings against Eglinton. It was my first century for Strabane at home so it was a very special one for me.
“Being part of the Strabane family is a great opportunity for me personally. The Club previously had good Sri Lankan professionals who were here. I heard good things from them and I am experiencing that now myself at the minute.
“The team got promoted last year and it’s a new challenge for them this year. I think they’re doing well, and I’m really happy how they enjoy the game and how they treat me as their professional. It’s also a great opportunity for me to play along with ex-Ireland international John Mooney.”
Ranitha has the chance to pick up some silverware on Friday night when Strabane face Bonds Glen in the Sperrin Springs final at St Johnston.
“I am really looking forward to us doing our best and winning the cup for Strabane. Everyone is working hard for this final and I’m sure it’s going to be a great match.
“I think we have a balanced side. I’m not saying we have the best team in the league but from what I’ve seen so far, I think our team spirit is second to none. Bond’s Glen are a good team but I think we have a good chance of lifting the cup.”
