Matthew Humphreys was the one shining light for Ireland in Co Tyrone as the Boys in Green suffered a 62-run shellacking by the West Indies in a high-octane T20 international at the fast-scoring Bready ground.
The first two matches in the series were washed out and the home side were soon wishing the third had been too as the visitors smashed and crashed their way to 256-5, clearing the short boundaries 20 times and adding as many fours.
Left-arm spinner Humphreys seemed to be playing a different game to the rest of the Ireland attack as he bowled a tidy opening over, followed it with another in the powerplay and then returned to take two wickets in three balls in his last.
The second of those victims was Evin Lewis who was caught at short extra cover for 91 from 44 balls to give Humphreys a worthy 2-16 from four overs — while none of his colleagues conceded fewer than 50.
Speedster Liam McCarthy, playing his first T20 after impressing in the ODI series last month, disappeared for 81 from his four overs — an unwanted Ireland record.
Skipper Paul Stirling set the tone for the chase by hitting the first three balls to the boundary but then fell in the next over leaving Ross Adair and Harry Tector to build a handy platform of 111-1 at halfway, with a second-wicket stand of 101.
Three wickets in the space of eight deliveries extinguished any faint hopes of a stunning victory, though.
Tector was lbw for 38 attempting to sweep a ball that was too full, his replacement Lorcan Tucker skied to long on, and Adair’s powerful innings ended two short of a deserved half-century when he was caught at deep mid-wicket.
Brother Mark Adair struck four maximums in a defiant 31 not out from 14 balls but the tail barely wagged and Ireland finished a long way short on 194-7.
Ireland have no further games scheduled now until they take on England in three T20s at Malahide in September.
The bad weather in Tyrone over the past few days has seen a fixture list that was already embarrassingly sparse lose more than 20 per cent of its games, meaning the most these full-time professionals will play this season is four T20s and three ODIs.
