Rain may have washed-out the entire Eastern Premier and Western Premiership One cards on Saturday but it relented – if only just – in time for Heriot’s to complete a resounding 215-run DLS Scottish Cup win over West of Scotland at Hamilton Crescent on Sunday.

The twice-abandoned second round tie went ahead at the third time of asking though, in a match reduced to 47 overs, the players were quickly scurrying from the field as the elements intervened once again.

It was a short-lived break on this occasion and on the resumption, Heriot’s, who been sent in to bat, made their attacking intentions clear in a brisk opening stand between Peter Ross and skipper Lloyd Brown.

The former hit three boundaries and a maximum in his 24 before being trapped in front by Dave McNulty. Veteran seamer McNulty came in for some hard-hitting punishment from Brown who raced to a half-century from only 22 deliveries, reaching the landmark with a pulled six, one of four maximums in his knock.

Having reached 55 Brown was undone by a McNulty delivery which careered into his stumps. However, the platform for a substantial total had been set, Josh Elliott and Dougie Voas going on to provide the backbone of the innings in a third wicket stand that yielded 118 runs.

Elliott led the way with his team’s top score, a well-compiled 65 featuring six boundaries and two maximums while Voas matched his partner’s boundary-four count in his 58. Both though were undone by home bowler MS Dhillon without whom West would have been chasing an even higher total. The spinner first pinned Elliott in front before bowling Voas six runs later.

Heriot’s, though, were already on course for a healthy total, late contributions of 33no from James Dickinson and 22 from Joe Kinghorn-Gray propelling them to 282-7.

In reply West’s batters toiled against a well-oiled Heriot’s attack. There was some early resistance but Joe Carrasco’s 17 was the best the home side could manage off the bat while 22 Extras proved their top scorer in a miserable total of 84 all out in 31.2 one-sided overs.

Spin-twins Dickinson and Ryan Brown contributed most to West’s downfall with 4-22 and 3-21 respectively, the last five wickets falling for just 10 runs.

Heriot’s will host RH Corstorphine in next Sunday’s quarter-finals while Arbroath travel to Carlton in another all-Eastern Premier encounter.

Western Premiership rivals Ferguslie and Prestwick clash at Meikleriggs and Forfarshire entertain Clydesdale in the only east versus west tie.
