Tom Johnson played a starring role for Irish Universities in their opening clash with St Andrew's, but in a losing cause as the Scottish side prevailed by four wickets.

Johnson top-scored with 61 as Ireland were bowled out for 235 in the 43rd over, while there were runs too for Ashwin Rajesh (36), Macdara Cosgrave (26), Mark Tonge (24), and Peter Forkin (20no).

Arjun Patel took four wickets, and the all-rounder proved the difference in the St Andrew's chase with a brilliant 104 to seal the win despite the best efforts of Leinster's Johnson, who claimed three wickets.

Ireland are back in action today, Wednesday, when they play the hosts Cambridge University, once again at Fenner's.
