Instonians beat Lisburn by three runs in the T20 Cup at Wallace Park on Friday night. That was the official result, apparently. But one ball was unrecorded by the scorers in the 19th over of the Lisburn chase and instead of needing 15 off the last over they actually needed 14.

The 19th over went 4 1+nb 4 6 2 2 1 (21 runs off the over)

It was recorded on nvplay, so presumably by the official scorers, as 4 4 6 2 2 1+nb. (20 runs) So a no-ball off the sixth ball but no seventh ball was recorded.

Did it make a difference? Well, when Ryan Macbeth hit the fourth ball of the final over, there was a long delay, presumably, while the umpires checked the official score. The nvPlay stream, which was by now two runs behind the correct score, was upped by one during the break and the players were told that six runs were needed to win. (It should have been only five).

Macbeth could only get a single off the fifth ball so Lisburn captain Neil Whitworth, now on strike, assumed that five runs were needed to win (it was actually four).

Does a batsman play a different stroke knowing he has to hit a six, rather than a four? Although on this occasion, a four would have correctly won the game (but officially tied it!). Whitworth could only hit it towards the fielder on the mid-wicket boundary and they trotted a single.

Defeat by three runs (it was actually two runs). Hopefully the error (not confusion) won’t affect the outcome of Group A in the T20 Cup.
