Teenager Charlie Downey took five wickets to claim the Man of the Match award for Newbuildings who beat Fox Lodge by 47 runs in a high scoring Sam McConnell T20 Charity final at the Rectory.

Downey's five-wicket haul was the one bowling performance of note on a day where the bat dominated the ball on an excellent Rectory track.

Both sides hit 19 sixes as a whopping 437 runs were scored in an entertaining contest.

JT hit 8 of them as he top scored with 80 from just 39 balls as his side raced out of the blocks.

He added 55 in 4 overs with Mark Hanna (27) and a further 80 in 6 overs with Ryan Hunter (32).

Trent McKeegan added further late impetus, clubbing five fours and three sixes in his 42 from 14 deliveries as Newbuildings closed on 242 for 7.

What appeared a daunting total was soon looking very achievable as TJ Nicholl and Gayan Maneeshan unleashed a boundary barrage of their own to put 80 on the board after four overs!

Nicholl made 49 from 18 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes), while Maneeshan cleared the ropes six times in his 47 from 17 balls.

Downey dismissed both and went on to account for Craig Doherty, Jason Milligan (20) and Adam Walker to get the match ball.

Dean McCarter (31) and Levi Kerr (23*) kept swinging, each hitting three sixes in a whirlwind last wicket partnership of 49, but they had left themselves too much to do - Jason Dunn bowling McCarter to seal the win.

There was a total of 1362 pounds raised which will be distributed to local charities by the Derry Midweek League.
