Irish Senior Cup draw brings North West sides together

1 July 2002

THE prospect of a Donemana-Limavady Royal Liver Irish Cup quarter final was the highlight of yesterday's public draw in Eglinton yesterday. Just 10 minutes into soccer's World Cup final, and with rain falling outside, Irish Cricket Union secretary John Wright decided it was a suitable time to hold the draw for a competition which still has 12 teams trying to get into four matches. For a few fleeting seconds, even the powerful counter attraction on the television was relegated to second place.

Donemana, the 2000 winners, beat their North West rivals in convincing fashion during the week in the Derry Journal League and this time they will have home advantage if Limavady account for Eglinton in their second round tie. The game, however, will be the last quarter final to be decided because Eglinton have been given special dispensation to host Limavady on Friday July 19, two days after the official reserve date.

The remaining second round ties are have all been arranged for this Friday. The other member of the North West's Big Three, Brigade, will be away to Malahide if they beat Waringstown in at Beechgrove this week. The quarter final draw, made by ICU trasurer Ian Gourley and North West manager John McMillan, in front of some very interested players, drew an animated response from Andrew Riddles and Jordan McGonigle when Donemana were given a home tie and everyone else reacted when the Limavady pairing came out immediately afterwards. Eglinton though beat NCU double winners North Down in the previous round, and may yet have a big say in the big match.

Whoever emerges, however, will guarantee a North West semi finalist and there is sure to be an NCU side in the last four as well with Muckamore drawn at home to the winners of Friday's other second round game at Strangford Road between Downpatrick and Instonians. Lisburn will have to beat two Leinster teams if they are to reach the semi finals for only the second time. They are at home to Rush in Friday's second round tie with the winners at home to Merrion in the quarter finals which will all be played on Saturday July 27.

Quarter final draw:

Games to be played on Saturday July 27.
