Downpatrick v Sion Mills

31 May 2002

DOWNPATRICK completed the first leg of their four-game weekend with an ultimately comfortable victory in the first round of the Royal Liver Irish Cup over Sion Mills.

But it was victory at a price because Paul Tate, their representative opening bowler, broke down after just four overs with a recurrence of the injury which kept him out of a league game last month. He will miss today's Deloitte & Touche Senior Cup tie but Downpatrick have not ruled him out of tomorrow's ClubTurf Cup semi final, although he may play only as a batsman.

Steady batting through out the innings, from captain Paul Linehan, who scored 44 of the first 60 runs, through Dale Mullan's 45 off just 63 balls to Gavin Ringland saw Dowpatrick through the 200 barrier and that proved 47 runs too good for Sion who collapsed from 90 for three.
