Limavady win North West Derby Final (by Ian Callender)

Limavady won the Irish Senior Cup when they defeated Strabane by four wickets in the all North-West final to become only the second North-West side to lift that trophy. Limavady owed much to their Irish international player, Decker Curry, who scored an unbeaten century after taking three Strabane wickets for 45 runs off his ten overs. Strabane who decided to bat first on a slow wicket were soon in trouble. In the first over John Gillespie was well caught by Curry off the bowling of Roger Kerr and the same bowler had his second wicket with nine runs on the board when he had Terence Patton (junior) caught behind by Crown. Peter and Mark Gillespie added 29 runs before Mark was caught by Garath Harron off Curry. Michael Gillespie and Keith Finley were dismissed by Curry in quick succession, leaving Strabane reeling at 48 for the loss of 5 wickets. Paul McNamee joined Peter Gillespie and they shared a partnership of 44 runs before Gillespie was dismissed with the score at 92 with six wickets down.

Dennis Porter hit a valuable 16 before departing at 119 for 7 and was quickly followed by Gerald Porter. Terence Patton (senior) stayed with McNamee while they took the total to 143 before Patton was caught behind off Kerr. Paul McNamee was last man out in the 49th over. An opening stand of 73 by Curry and Garth Harron from 22 overs saw Limavady well in command but the loss of six wickets for 55, during which Gerald Porter took three wickets for one run in eight balls brought Strabane back into the game. But Curry found a reliable partner in Denis Christie to see Limavady home by four wickets finishing the game with a six, the third of his innings.

For his innings of 111 not out together with his bowling figures of three for 45 off 10 overs, the former Ireland and Brigade bowler, Roy Torrens, presented Curry with the Man of the Match award.
