Brigade v Downpatrick: Irish Cup

Barry Chambers, 23 June 2001

Brigade advanced to the semi finals of the Irish Senior Cup with a comfortable 32 run win over Downpatrick at Beechgrove. Batting first Brigade lost opener John Browne for 14 with the score on 29, but recovered well with skipper David Cooke making 56 and Alan Rutherford 36. Together the pair added 72 before they both fell in quick succession to leave the score on 122-3. Rutherford became the first of Geoffrey Ferguson's five victims as he returned figures of 5-57 in his ten over spell. Jason Brown made 24 and Ivan Nicholl struck a quickfire 17 as Brigade lost wickets in the search for quick runs.

Ivan NichollIn reply Downpatrick lost the wicket of Shilliday who was bowled by Gordon Cooke for 1 with the score on 5. Paul Linehan batted well for his 44 before he too fell to Cooke. Spinner Ivan Nicholl (right) captured the wickets of S Ferguson and Derek McCann, and when Jason Brown ripped through the middle order the game was always going to be beyond Downpatrick at 92 for 7. Some lusty blows from Gavin Ringland who made 32 and James Cunningham who finished on 22 not out brought some respectability to the score. Jason Brown with 3-32 was the best of the Brigade attack, and there was two wickets apiece for Ivan Nicholl and Gordon Cooke. Ivan Nicholl was nominated Man of the Match for his 17 and two important wickets. Brigade now have a home tie with Cliftonville in the semi final.
