Thirds finish in style as seconds win Junior One

Waringstown’s 3rd XI travelled to Muckamore on Sunday to take on their second XI in the final game of the season in Junior One.
The home side were at full strength and they knew that if they won they would gain a share of the Junior one title with Waringstown’s 2nd XI.
The thirds were asked to bat first and got off to a great start as openers Matthew Allen and Ben McKnight punished the bowling to all parts of the ground.
They put on 80 for the first wicket as Allen was the first to go for an excellent 47 including three boundaries and one six. A few wickets fell but Ben McKnight continued to be the mainstay of the innings making 73 which included eight fours and two clearances of the rope as he took his seasons tally well past the 500 run mark. Andrew Magennis was the only other player to make double figures with 14 as the visitors ended on 160-7 from 20 overs.
In the reply plenty of hard work had to be done and Matthew Allen (1-16) removed the dangerous Millar for 3.
Luke Allen and Richard Keates took the score last 100 before the spin of Ross Waite (3-26) and Paddy Allen (2-23) slowed the rate down. The pairs eight overs going for just 49 and taking five wickets.
Ross Waite got rid of Keates for 39 caught by Ian Morrison at long off and in the next over bowled Allen for 52 as the rate climbed on the home side.
Paddy Allen picked up two wickets in two balls in his final over to go along with a run out as the thirds ran out comfortable 22 run winners in a complete team performance and finish joint fourth in Junior One.
It has been another fine performance by the 3rd XI who have been well led by captain Mark Fitzpatrick with all the players enjoying their cricket and Sunday’s win also saw the clubs 2nd XI win the Junior One title outright.
It all leads well into this Friday evening where as club we will all have plenty to celebrate at our awards evening in The ROY Harrison Pavilion.
