The second day of the European Under-19 Division 2 Championship has seen Guernsey record their first win of the tournament, beating Italy today at Colchester Cricket Club.

Batting first after winning the toss, Guernsey lost Tom Veillard in the first over, but didn't let that early setback effect them, with Ryan Harris and Arun White putting on 65 for the second wicket before Harris was out for 22.

White was the third wicket to fall, with the score on 97, and then Thomas Nightingale and William Fazakerley put on 72 for the fourth wicket, the latter being dismissed for 28. Nightingale stayed in until the end of the Guernsey innings, scoring an unbeaten 74 and taking Guernsey to 223-7 from their 50 overs.

Italy did at least manage to put up more of a fight than they did yesterday against Jersey, but scored their runs way too slowly throughout their innings. It was only the 43 extras - including 40 wides - given away by Guernsey that gave their score a degree of respectability.

They were restricted to 173-9 from their 50 overs, losing by 20 runs. William Fazakerley was the pick of the Guernsey bowlers with 4-50, but he was the main culprit in terms of bowling wides, giving away 10 of them.

Guernsey will need to work on that issue with the wides before they take on their Channel Island rivals Jersey tomorrow. Italy will also be back in action tomorrow, and they will take on tournament favourites Netherlands at Halstead Cricket Club.
