Merrion too strong for Donemana in Irish Cup semi-final
Donemana's quest for a fourth trophy of the season and a second Bob Kerr Irish senior cup triumph ended in disappointment at the Holm on Saturday when Richard Kee's side was well beaten by 2010 winners, Merrion.
The hosts were in trouble right from the start having been put into bat as Dom Joyce and Alex Chetkovich got right among the top order.
Openers Graeme Boyd and Kamran Sajid were both dismissed without scoring as batting proved very difficult and when Ricky-lee Dougherty, Richard Kee and then Jordan McGonagle then fell in quick succession the Tyrone side were in all sorts of bother.
Junior McBrine helped calm things down a little but Kyle Dougherty's dismissal left the board reading 52 for 6 and it seemed a long way back from there.
Dwayne McGerrigle at number 8 stepped up to the plate and with McBrine set about repairing the damage as best they could. The pair went on to post a very valuable 76-run partnership; McGerrigle hitting a half century that included 4 fours and 4 sixes as the hosts recovered to 128 for 6.
That was to be as good as it got for Donemana however as in very un-typical fashion they collapsed again at the end, the last 4 wickets falling for the addition of just 1 run, and that a wide ball. Junior McBrine finished with 33 but six players dismissed without scoring told its own story.
Joyce was the architect of Donemana's downfall as he finished with figures of 4 for 19 while Chetkovich (3 for 34) and skipper John Anderson (2 for 23) provided solid back-up.
Merrion decided that the only way to play was to attack and they went for it from the start in reply. Rory Allwright was to dominate the Leinster side's chase hitting an unbeaten 74 that included 9 fours and 4 sixes and although Robert Huey picked up a couple of quick wickets to give the home support something to cheer it never looked likely to be their day.
Kade Beasley (19*) and Tim Lang (14) chipped in with cameos but after the visitors' attack had set it up, it was Allwright that ended Donemana's hopes for another year.
Merrion will now face The Hilsl in the final at the start of September after the Milverton side overcame holders Waringstown by 7 wickets at The Lawn.
