Murder of Louis Vorster
Cricket Namibia have expressed their "shock and dismay" after Louis Vorster, who played ten times for Namibia, was shot dead during a robbery at a petrol station just outside Pretoria yesterday.
In a statement issued by Cricket Namibia president Francois Erasmus they said, "The Executive Board and management of Cricket Namibia learnt with shock and dismay of the untimely death of one of Namibia's cricketing legends, Louis Vorster. Louis was gunned down by robbers whilst on a business visit to Gauteng."
"Louis was a true gentleman of the game, one of the best exponents of left-handed batting and an inspiration to those who played the game with him. Louis played a pivotal role in the development and coaching of many young and upcoming cricketers in Namibia."
"He touched the lives of all those around him because he was genuinely interested in the well-being of his team mates and protégés. Louis will be sorely missed. His talent and dedication is irreplaceable."
"Our hearts and prayers go out to Rika, Henre and his family. May you rest in peace Louis Vorster."
Vorster spent most of his career in South Africa, playing for Transvaal, Northern Transvaal and North West. He represented a South African Invitational XI and South African Universities against the Australian "rebel" tourists of 1986/87.
He played second XI cricket for Warwickshire and Worcestershire in England, playing one first-class match for the latter against the touring West Indians in 1988, the match in which Graeme Hick passed 1000 first-class runs for the season, the last time that feat was achieved before the end of May.
He relocated to Namibia in 2007 and made a surprising comeback to first-class cricket at the age of 40 later that year when he made his debut for Namibia against his old team North West. He played five further first-class matches for Namibia, in addition to three List A matches and a match against Zimbabwe A in 2009. He last played for them in October 2009.
In all, he played 95 first-class matches, scoring 4786 runs at an average of 33.23, with a top score of 188. In List A cricket he scored 2186 runs at an average of 30.36 with a top score of 93 not out.
Vorster was 45 years old, and a murder investigation has been opened by police.
