Big prize eludes both CI teams

An excellent start by Jersey's openers starts to unravel with the run-out of Ed Farley against Italy in Saturday's semi-final at the Farmer's Field

DENMARK defeated Italy in the at the FB Fields yesterday to replace Jersey as ICC European Division I champions.

Hours earlier, Jersey, thanks to a brilliant 90 from Ed Farley, took third place after stylishly seeing off Guernsey.

But the real prizes had been secured in Saturday's semi-finals when both Denmark and Italy secured a place in the Twenty20 World Cup global qualifier in Dubai by winning their respective last four games over Guernsey and Jersey. Jersey's hopes of a trip to the United Emirates in March were ended by Italy at the Farmer's Field on Saturday, but they Craig Hogan's men recovered well by defeating Guernsey by eight wickets yesterday.

Chasing 158 to win against Guernsey, Jersey were led home by opener Ed Farley who scored a tremendous 90 runs. Farley, later named man-of-the-match and most valuable player in the tournament, displayed awesome power as he yielded 72 of his runs in boundaries - smashing eight sixes and six fours.
