Papua New Guinea clinch 50-over title
ICC Media Release
Hosts Papua New Guinea warmed-up for the World Cricket League Division 3 when a representative side won the 50-over title in a quadrangular tournament played in Port Moresby from September 1-5.
Papua New Guinea remained unbeaten in the 50-over tournament that also featured Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
But the home team could not round-off the Twenty20 tournament that followed with a similar effort, as they lost in the final to Malaysia.
In the 50-over competition played on a round-robin format, Papua New Guinea started off by beating Malaysia by 46 runs. The home team followed it up with impressive wins over Singapore (by four wickets) and a young and inexperienced Hong Kong (by 56 runs).
In the Twenty20 tournament that followed, Papua New Guinea made it to the final of the competition after remaining unbeaten in the league stage. In the final, Malaysia upset the home team to win the title.
Singapore finished third in the Twenty20 competition beating Hong Kong in the play-off match. A developing Hong Kong team, also scheduled to feature in the World Cricket League Division 3, did not win a single game in both the formats during the quadrangular tournament.
