ICC Media Release
Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu have emerged as convincing winners on Day 1 of the 2010 Pepsi ICC EAP U17 Cricket Trophy in Port Vila, Vanuatu today.
At Independence Park, Indonesian Captain Gema Fajar won the toss and elected to bowl in hot conditions, hoping to pick up early wickets against the powerful PNG team.
While Indonesia had plenty of enthusiasm early, the wickets did not tumble and PNG's talented openers began to score quickly, with Captain Dogodo Bau (25) finding form.
After reaching 0 for 69, the Indonesian team fought back valiantly, with their hard work finally paying off. They grabbed 6 quick wickets for just 36 runs, to have the perennially strong PNG team under pressure.
Star opening bowler Kabua Vagi came to the crease, and with a mix of patience and hard hitting, combined with lower order batsman Vanua to put on a much needed partnership of 51, Vagi finally dismissed for a classy 44 from just 45 balls.
With 177 on the board, and an extremely strong bowling line up, the PNG team were confident of a win, however with the Indonesians holding firm to be 1 for 23 at lunch, the match was still in the balance.
After lunch however, PNG asserted their dominance, with Nau (4 for 3 from 4 overs) and Agalu (3 for 10 from 5 overs) doing the damage, the Indonesians dismissed for a disappointing 52.
In the other match held at Kazaa Field, hosts Vanuatu made light work of a young Fiji outfit, knocking up 228 from their 35 overs, with Ronald Tari making 58 and Nalin Nipiko knocking up 46. Tabua was the best of the Fiji bowlers with 4 for 46.
In reply Fiji were never in the hunt, dismissed for 117 in the 27th over, with the Blake brothers taking 3 wickets each.
