There will be Irish interest in the final of the ETPL at Malahide after all, with Belfast Wolves easing to a seven wickets victory in the Eliminator against Amsterdam Flames.

Four wickets for Wolves captain Glenn Maxwell, three of them clean bowled, and three by Matthew Humphreys saw the Flames all out for 133 from the last ball of the innings and two successive sixes from the Big Show won the match with nine balls to spare.

Lorcan Tucker and Tim Tector also played their part in front of their home crowd, with Tector scoring an impressive 28 from 21 balls and Tucker hitting 10 off the 18th over to virtually ensure victory, and finishing 34 not out.

Top scorer was Devon Conway with a patient 35 from 41 balls but Paul Stirling will hope he has left his best innings for the final, caught again today for just eight, from 11 balls in what has been an underwhelming tournament for Ireland’s 50-over captain.

The opening stand of 46 between Yuvraaj Samra and Steve Smith was the highlight of the Flames innings, helped by Samra being dropped in the fourth over by Tector, but when he was run out by Mark Adair going for a second run in the seventh over, it was downhill from then on.

Maxwell was the destroyer in chief, dismissing Bas de Leede in his second over, thanks to a stunning low catch in the covers by Harry Manenti. Two balls later he bowled the dangerous Tim David and in his next over Curtis Campher got an inside edge onto his stumps to leave Amsterdam 74 for four after 11 overs.

The captain wasn’t finished, and in his last over he bowled Michael Bracewell to finish with career best figures of four for 18.

Smith was watching the wreckage from the other end but after scoring 45 from 42 balls, the Australian charged Humphreys and was comfortably stumped by Tucker.

The first of two short rain interruptions came halfway through the 17th over but it only helped the Wolves, and Humphreys in particular as he bowled Flames captain Scott Edwards and had Tim Pringle caught at slip from the first two balls on the resumption.

Max O’Dowd and Aryan Dutt shared four boundaries in their ninth wicket stand of 32 to give their bowlers something to bowl at but a total off 133 was never likely to be enough and so it proved.
