Edinburgh Castle Rockers returned to the top of the ETPL table after condemning Dublin Guardians to their third successive defeat in the second match of the day at Voorburg.

The Scottish side were actually penalised for bowling out the Guardians for just 109 because although they passed the total in the 14th over for the loss of six wickets, their run rate actually slipped back.

Victory was all but guaranteed after Ross Adair took 24 (two sixes and three fours) from the first six balls of the innings and it was 37 for two after two overs, but unsurprisingly they couldn’t maintain that charge and used up another 12 overs for the remaining 73 runs.

Dublin, however, are still searching for answers, with the batters failing to deliver. Only James Vince (40 off 30 balls) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi with a run-a-ball 24 made it into double figures as Edinburgh skipper Mitch Santner became the latest bowler in this tournament to take his first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket.

Daryl Mitchell was his first victim in his opening over, Vince gave him a return catch in his second and three balls later Ben Calitz wasted a review when he was plumb leg before.

That review proved costly at the start of Santner’s next over when George Dockrell was also given out leg before but this time the television replay showed it was missing the leg stump but with no review available Dockrell had to walk off.

Santner claimed his elusive fifth wicket – in his 284th game – when Matt Hollard holed out to long-on, fittingly caught by his Kiwi colleague Trent Boult who had taken his first five-for in Edinburgh’s previous game.

There was no doubting the Castle Rockers approach when they began the chase with Adair tearing into Chris Wood and with the help of a free-hit, he had hit all but one of his six balls to the boundary. He still couldn’t survive the over, driving the extra ball high to cover where Harry Tector held on.

Hollard had Andries Gous also caught in the covers by Dockrell in what proved to be his only over, but it was Dockrell who was the most successful bowler, finishing with three for 24 in his four overs, without any help from a fielder.

The Scottish pair of Brandon McMullan and Laurie Evans were lbw and bowled respectively and with just four runs required for victory Dockrell bowled his Ireland team-mate Gareth Delany who had scored 10 from 16 balls in his first innings of the tournament.

It left a reluctant Santner to come to the middle and he duly hit the winning run, off Tector’s first over, to complete the perfect personal and team performance.

It is a rest day in Voorburg on Monday with the tournament resuming on Tuesday afternoon when Glasgow Comic take on Rotterdam Dockers.
