Harry Tector was the game’s top scorer but it wasn’t enough to prevent Dublin Guardians falling to a second defeat as Glasgow Cosmic got off the mark in Match Five of the ETPL.

Half centuries from Jason Roy (60) and Richie Berrington (51 off 27) helped Glasgow to an above par 183 for five and despite Tector scoring 75 from just 43 balls (eight fours and three sixes) wickets kept falling at the other end and it was game up when the Ireland international was brilliantly caught in the covers at the start of the 18th over. Despite another unbeaten knock at the end from Matthew Hollard (14 off seven), including his second six of the tournament, the final margin was a comfortable 33 runs.

Hollard and Josh Little bowled three of the last four overs but they had no further success as Mathew Cross and Michael Leask put Glasgow firmly in control with another 37 runs.

Roy, playing his first game, got off to a slow start but once he got into his stride he hit eight fours and a six, but still played second fiddle to Berrington, who hit four sixes, in a fourth wicket partnership of 68. Hollard ended the stand when he forced Roy to play on and two balls later had the Scottish captain caught at cow corner.

Earlier, George Dockrell has claimed the big wicket of Liam Livingstone for just four but it was his only success as his three overs went for 39 and Little was also wicketless, conceding 33 runs in his four overs. Hollard’s figures were two for 29.

The absence of a substantial partnership for the Guardians was the undoing – the best just 35 for the second wicket between Tector and James Vince – with Ben Calitz and George Dockrell both dismissed for five. USA international Sanjay Krishnamurthi was second top scorer with 20.

Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the Glasgow bowlers, finishing with four for 21 and he received good support from Paul van Meekeren (3-28) and Ali Khan (2-25) to earn the Scottish side a deserved first win.
