Whilst the World Test Championship was in the process of an anti-climatic final at Lord's, the best international cricket in the UK today was over 350 miles north in Dundee as yet another last over finish took place at Forthill, where a record breaking George Munsey innings wasn't enought for the hosts as a Max O'Dowd led chase secured a four wicket win for the Netherlands.
Scotland captain Matthew Cross won the toss and elected to bat first, and their innings was dominated by George Munsey. The big hitting left-hander reached his 50 in 54 balls and began accelerating. The next 50 came from 41 balls, and the third 50 came from 37.
Munsey faced 18 more balls and took his score to 191, falling just short of becoming the first associate player to make a double century in ODIs. The previous highest score by an associate player was Paul Stirling's 177 against Canada in Toronto in 2010. The previous Scotland record was Calum MacLeod's 175 (also against Canada) during the 2014 World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand. It was also the highest ODI score against an associate member, beating Gary Kirsten's 188 against the UAE in the 1996 World Cup.
The only other score of note in the Scotland innings was Matthew Cross' innings of 59 as the home side racked up a formidable 369-6 from their 50 overs.
The Netherlands run chase started quickly with the opening pairing of Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd scoring 67 in 9.2 overs before Levitt was out for 44. Zach Lion-Cachet followed for 3 soon afterwards, just before O'Dowd began accelerating.
He brought up his 50 from 43 balls, but his next 50 took 51 and the Dutch needed 134 runs in 15 overs when he brought up his 100. But the fall of the fifth wicket in the 41st over brought Noah Croes to the crease and he clubbed 50 from only 28 balls to ramp up the pressure on the home side, with the pair adding 76 in 7.2 overs.
Max O'Dowd and Teja Nidamanuru during the Dutch run chase
The Dutch had got the required rate down to less than one run per ball with 11 required from the last two overs. Eight came from the 49th over, during which O'Dowd brought up his 150 from 128 balls - his third 50 coming in just 32 balls. With three needed from the last, Roelof van der Merwe scored a single from the first ball before O'Dowd sealed the four wicket win with his fourth six. There have only been two higher successful chases in men's ODIs.
That ends this leg of the CWC League 2 tournament, with the three teams involved set to take part in a T20I tri-series that begins on Sunday in Glasgow. The next tri-series in CWC League 2 will take place in Canada in August with Namibia and Scotland the visiting teams.
