As Nepal fans know, they have a habit of producing thrilling finishes and snatching unlikely victories from the jaws of defeat.
That was to the fore in Dundee today as they recovered from 192-7 to chase down a target of 296 at the last gasp in what was one of the all time great ODIs.
Nepal captain Rohit Paudel won the toss and asked Scotland to bat first at Forthill, with George Munsey out early on before Charlie Tear and Brandon McMullen added 51 for the second wicket. McMullen was out for 19 before Tear and captain Richie Berrington added a further 79.
Tear was the next man out having scored 80, whilst Berrington followed soon afterwards for 40. Finlay McCreath and Matthew Cross added another 78 before Cross was out for 39 with McCreath going on to reach 55 before he was out in the last over of the Scotland innings.
The final total for Scotland was 296-7, setting a formidable target for Nepal in relatively unfamiliar conditions.
Opening pair Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh put on 72 before both fell in quick succession shortly after the fielding restrictions were relaxed, Bhurtel having scored 53. Contributions also came from Bhim Sharki (40) and Rohit Paudel (37) but wickets kept falling and Nepal found themselves on 192-7 with 11.4 overs to come.
In walked Karan KC - who has form when it comes to remarkable comebacks - and he and Gulsan Jha set about the Scottish bowling attack. The pair added 60 runs before Jha was out in the 46th over, and Karan KC just kept on going.
With three overs left Nepal needed 38 runs to win with two wickets in hand, and at this point Karan KC really put his foot on the accelerator. Thirteen runs came from over 48, with another 18 coming from the penultimate over, changing the equation to a more manageable seven runs from six balls.
The final over was bowled by Mark Watt, a canny operator if ever there was one, and he remove Sandeep Lamichhane from the first ball of the over. A wide followed, then a dot, then a single. Five needed off three. Two runs from ball four and ball five levelled the scores.
Watt fired in something of a leg stump yorker and Nepal ran through for the quick single. The wicketkeeper fumbled before taking the bails off with the runner short of the crease. Scotland start to celebrate before the umpire puts his arms out to signal a wide. Scotland lose by one wicket and the comeback kings of Nepal have done it again.
