THE death has taken place of former Munster and Waterford all-rounder Peter Thomas, aged 78. The ex-professional footballer died after a long illness.

He played three games for Munster in 1982 and 1983, scoring 28 against South Leinster at Kimmage. He played alongside fellow Waterford footballers Dave Kirby and Johnny Matthews.

Coventry-born Thomas was better known as goalkeeper of Waterford AFC when they were a force in the League of Ireland. He made 599 appearances over 15 seasons, winning five League titles and was man of the match in the Blues cup win over St Pat’s in 1980.

Thomas signed for Waterford in the summer of 1967, and took out Irish citizenship, winning two international caps. He later played for Galway United and Drogheda United until he retired aged 40.
