It was a great year for Lisburn as they won the Premier League and reached the final of the Irish Senior Cup.

In the year of the underdog it was a truly remarkable feat by the Wallace Park side, who emerged victorious in what is always an incredibly challenging environment.

So what changed from a side that finished bottom in 2021?

The personnel were by and large the same, but the addition of David Miller and Neil Whitworth helped with the depth.

They had a simple formula - try to get 200 on the board, and their bowling attack would do the rest. And it worked!

Week in, week out, they squeezed teams and kept winning matches. You kept waiting for them to falter, but this was no Devon Loch, it was Leicester City.

They had all the neutrals on their side and an affable, approachable skipper Callum Atkinson can be justifiably proud of their success.

Looking at the stats, Faiz Fazal topped 1000 runs, scoring four hundreds in his 1174 at 58.70. He forged a successful opening partnership with Jonathan Waite, who hit 463 runs at 21.05 (4 fifties).

New signing Miller made 407 at 21.42, while Neil Whitworth (331 at 17.42), David Simpson (287 at 28.70), Glenn Halliday (267 at 20.54) and Adam Berry (265 at 13.25) all chipped in.

The bowling unit was their trump card though. It had variety, quality, and depth.

No fewer than seven bowlers topped 20 wickets, with all averaging between just under 15 and 23.

Mark Berry led the way with 35 wickets, followed by Matthew Humphreys and Neil Whitworth, who both captured 30.

Faiz Fazal and Josh Manley both took 23 scalps, while David Simpson claimed 21 and skipper Atkinson 20 in a superb team effort.

The challenge now of course is to build on their success and not make this a one-off.

There are signs that they will indeed strengthen the playing pool and it promises to be a busy close season for the most popular of clubs.
