The emergence of the Omicron Covid-19 variant could have unwanted consequences for the Under 19 World Cup which is due to begin in the West Indies in just six weeks' time.

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda are all slated to participate in the 16-team event, but given the current flight bans and quarantine restrictions in place for the region their involvement is very much in the balance.

ICC cancelled the Women's Qualifiers in Zimbabwe at the weekend, with the teams currently making their way home via a variety of circuitous routes.

New Zealand had earlier withdrawn from the competition due to the quarantine restrictions, with their place taken by Scotland.

Ireland are in Group B alongside South Africa, Uganda and India.

The Irish squad for the European qualifiers contained two South African based Irish passport holders, Liam Doherty and Josh Cox.

Ireland Under 19s are due to leave for pre-tournament tour of the USA on December 26th ahead of the tournament proper.
