Hosts Romania have won the 2021 edition of the Continental Cup after beating Luxembourg in today’s final.

Batting first after winning the toss, the home team lost Taranjeet Singh and Ramesh Satheesan early on in their innings but recovered as Gohar Manan scored a quick 24 from 11 balls. This was followed by 35 from Asif Bevinje and the key innings of 55 from 38 balls by wicket-keeper Satvik Nadigotla.

All five Luxembourg bowlers took a wicket as Romania were bowled out for 156, losing their last wicket from the penultimate delivery of their innings. Amit Dhingra and Vikram Vijh both took two wickets.

Luxembourg’s reply never really got going with no real significant contribution. Romania shared the wickets around six different bowlers with Aftab Kayani the pick of the bunch, taking two wickets for just seven runs from his two overs.

Luxembourg did bat out their 20 overs but were well short of their target, being restricted to 123-9 from their 20 overs, losing by 33 runs.

Also today, Hungary secured third place in their play-off against Malta. After Malta scored 170-5 from their 20 overs, Hungary started their chase with a 121 run opening partnership between Zeeshan Kukikhel and Abhijeet Ahuja.

Kukikhel was their top scorer with 82 from just 42 balls whilst skipper Ahuja finished unbeaten on 58 as his team completed an eight wicket win with ten balls to spare.
