Northern Knights all-rounder Luke Georgeson has been given his first professional contract with Wellington Firebirds in his native New Zealand.

The 22 year-old is a former Black Caps Under 19 international who played in the 2018 U19 World Cup.

He became a regular in the Firebirds set up at the end of the domestic campaign, and continued that rich vein of form for both CSNI and the Northern Knights.

The left-hander is a quality opening batsman and useful change bowler.

An Irish passport holder, Georgeson scored a match winning half century for the Knights in their T20 win on Sunday against Munster at Sydney Parade.

He became eligible for Irish selection from the end of January 2021, three years after he last played for NZ U19s. (The criteria has changed from four years to three).

There were rumours he would be fast-tracked into the squad for the forthcoming series against South Africa and Zimbabwe, but his acceptance of a contract in New Zealand probably ends any speculation of Irish ambitions in the near future, as he would be considered an overseas player if he donned the green jersey.
